Abstract

The aim is to assess the evolution of prevalence and incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by sex, from 2008-2020, as well as more frequent comorbidities and municipal distribution in the province of Almeria (Spain).
A longitudinal descriptive study is carried out using information from the Educational Administration, calculating prevalence and cumulative incidence throughout the period, stratified by sex. For the prediction calculation, trend analysis and regression analysis are used to determine the relationship between the general population distribution and the ASD population.
In the province of Almeria (Spain), prevalence increased from 4.58 for men in 2008 to 15.26 in 2020, and from 1.49 for women in 2008 to 2.71 in 2020. There is an average annual increase in cumulative incidence of 1.09. It is expected to reach a prevalence of 18.41 in men and 3.22 in women by 2025. The most common comorbidities are mental retardation and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. As for its municipal distribution, the distribution of the population in general explains the distribution of children with ASD.
We conclude with a growth in the prevalence of ASD in the province of Almería that is expected to continue increasing in the coming years.
