Abstract

The Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS) continues with its line of including the founding women of our discipline in the canon of sociology. In this sense, the book Cómo observar la moral y las costumbres is its second translation from English into Spanish and the first to be edited by Capitolina Díaz Martínez. The Englishwoman Harriet Martineau (1802-1876), considered the first sociologist, wrote 'How to Observe Morals and Manners' in 1838, at the age of 36. This book is presented in a masterly way by its editor, as a prelude to this essential reading on methods and techniques of social research.
